ten torn anxiously
ten torn anxiously through their chairs
death against a fence
a lifetime undone

This short poem was composed in 2003. It evokes the reality of the heavy-handed cruelties in the worst military dictatorships anywhere in the world. Such a reality is war... war on lives. On whole lives.
This poem isn't a comment on the current Iraq war. I'll save that for some other time. Though as long as I've mentioned Iraq... the poem would certainly apply to the former Saddam Hussein regime.
The photo is from the mid-1970s. It was taken near the State Farm Show Building (which is in the background along the bottom). This would have been before the huge intersection now at Cameron St and Elmerton Ave.
