Temple of Hadrian, Ephesus
Hadrianus Temple.Built in 117-118 AD by Vedidus Antoninus Sabinus to the honor of emperor Hadrianus (78-138 AD) during his visit to Ephesus.
On the front face of Hadrian's Temple there are four Corinthian columns and an arch resting on these columns. The keystone of the arch is decorated with a relief of Fortuna, the goddess of fortune. On the front face of the arch above the door, there is a controversial figure. Some interpret this figure as the snake-headed Medusa, others as Flora, the goddess of flowers and plants or Hadrian's wife.
The friezes in the interior of the temple tell the story of the foundation of Ephesus. Scenes such as Androklos' boar hunt, Dionysus' procession and the Amazons are engraved on the friezes. The fourth frieze features figures of gods and
goddesses such as Apollo and Athena.
