Lauren's Grape poppies
...in the gardens of Crook Hall, Durham. Palaver somniferum is a more recent variety of the opium poppy with big single flowers in attractive plum-purple colours that open in succession from June to August.
Cared for by the National Trust since spring 2022, Crook Hall features a series of interlinking gardens, each with its own style and character, set against the backdrop of a Grade 1 listed medieval hall. Visitors can discover a maze, a secret walled garden, an orchard, a wildlife-rich moat pool, tranquil seating areas, and views of Durham city and cathedral.
Taken during what turned out to be a 'last fling' with Nikon as my main format, a brief experience of mirrorless full-frame and one of the best-performing super-zoom lenses I've ever used. Unfortunately, I came to the same conclusion with mirrorless as I had previously reached with DSLR: basically that full-frame amounts to 'more camera' than I need.
