Central hall at Wallington
Wallington is a country estate located about twelve miles west of Morpeth, in Northumberland, near the village of Cambo. The National Trust has owned the estate since 1942, after it was donated, complete with its gardens and farms, by Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan, the first donation of its kind. The house is a Grade I listed building, with a beautifully furnished interior.
Originally an open courtyard, this space was roofed over in the 1850s. The central hall then became the hub of the house, with the family coming together for tea and the children playing with the ‘beasties’ – rocking and wheeled horses of various sizes.
