Transition

Just South of the village of Jordan Station, Ontario, 'The Twenty' cascades down the Niagara Escarpment on it's way North to Lake Ontario. In this image, the largest drop at Balls Falls is actually upstream and a couple of hundred meters to the left of the frame, hidden by the steep, wooded banks along the left as we see it her. The water has had a chance to return to a placid look as it comes around the bend and flows toward this spot and then once again makes a transition to a fast-moving, rapids just out of view to the right of the frame. Shown here in spring and late afternoon, it looks inviting but once spring run-offs start, this is a dangerous place and bears little resemblance to this scene. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D5000 fitted with a Nikkor 18-105mm VR lense set to 28mm, ISO200, Aperture priority mode, f/9.0, 1/80 sec. PP in GIMP: slight tone curve adjustment to add a bit of crispness and brighten up the white areas I the water, slight saturation boost overall as well as some additional boost to the greens, sharpen, add bars and text, scale to 1024 wide for posting.
