Snow Squalls Over Lake Ontario

While out a few days ago to check on the status of the Groynes out at Kelson Beach/Fifty point, snow squalls were active out on Lake Ontario. A thin layer of snow covered the beach and the reeds were blowing in the stiff breeze. Overall it was a rather bleak scene. But there was no ice to be seen and the sky was a leaden grey. Perhaps over the next few weeks temperatures will drop sufficiently and for long enough to build up layers on the groynes and the shore. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with a Nikkor 12-24mm lense set to 24mm and fitted with a 10-stop Neutral Density/ND filter (to smooth out the water surface), ISO100, Auto WB, Manual exposure mode, f/8.0, 10 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: scale image up to 9000x6000, set exposure to as-shot, enable Graduated Neutral Density/GND filter tool and use it to darken the sky slightly and bring out the clouds by balancing their tonality better with the foreground, enable highlights-shadows tool and bring up the shadows slightly, slightly increase contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, slightly boost vibrance, sharpen, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: adjust the tone curve to darken the bottom 10% of the curve slightly and then lift/brighten the mid-point of the rest of the curve slightly above the default value, mask out the groyne and use the mask to adjust the tonality of the groynes without changing the tonality of the rest of the image, create new layer from visible result, slightly increase contrast, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000x4000, sharpen slightly, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 1800 wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
