When The Music Stops, Exit

Recently, we trouped off to Simcoe, Ontario to visit the Norfolk County Fall Fair and Horse Show, which is probably the best fall fair in Ontario and one of the last as the fair season winds down on Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. On this ride, the overall colours changed in cyclic pattern so I waited for the green cycle to coincide with the young ladies exiting the ride, to capture this image. The gentleman holding the gate looks like he has seen far too many of these neon nights. Love the in-your-face colour of the midways at these fairs - JW

Taken using a hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, Auto WB, ISO900 (Auto ISO), Aperture priority mode, f/2.5, 1/160 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: scale image to 9000x6000, set exposure to approx 1.25 stops higher (brighter) than as-shot, adjust contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, increase vibrance, enable shadows-highlights and bring up highlights to recover detail in the lights, sharpen, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: load the image onto three layers and add a black/transparent layer mask to each. On one layer use a soft-edged white brush to paint in the music panel lower left, on another paint in the faces and on the last paint in the magenta neon lights along the top, then using the relevant adjustment layer adjust the tone and contrast of each of the areas representing the music panel, faces and magenta neon lights so each looks good, create new working layer from visible results, do some minor fine-tuning to saturation contrast and overall brightness, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000x4000, sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 1800 wide for posting, sharpen slightly, save.
