Golden Point -- 'The waft of french fries from this corner crippled all self-control.'

In Warren, across Elm Rd. from the Elm Rd. Plaza and the Elm Road Drive-in Theatre is the Golden Point Plaza. Years ago the gold tower on the red roof of the plaza advertised the "Golden Point" 'PDQ' hamburger along with what I thought were the world's best french fries that you could drown with malt vinegar (pretty much a dead tradition now).

McDonalds had its golden arches and the Golden Point had its -- well -- Golden Point. I always thought Warren's Golden Point was named so because it was located on a strip of land shaped that came to a 'v-point' between Elm Rd. and Reeves Rd. at a complicated three-way intersection which included Genesee Ave. Not so--in spite of it's apt location, it was part of (for a time) a successful franchise. The franchise was founded in 1958, and I can can attest to the fact that it was up and running in Warren by 1962 when our family first moved into the area. I got to know it a lot better when I learned to drive the family buick in 1964. A popular hang out after football and basketball games. There were at least eighty other Golden Points nationwide.

The red roof and golden tower are all that's left. From PDQ's and fries to laundromat.
