Barbara Caruso's Theo Van Doesburg
by jwc 3o2
in the fall of 2oo2, Barbara Caruso exhibited (at the ArtWord Gallery in Toronto) a 2nd set of black on white line drawings she'd made based on the rectiform alphabet devised by Theo Van Doesburg in 1919. i have written about this elsewhere & will append that review (originally written into the guestbook accompanying the show at the gallery) below.
i also took a series of photographs of the installation. there was no attempt to coërce anykind of fidelity to her finely detailed linework; instead, the photos were a sort of attempt to demonstrate the ethereal motion & multiplicities her hard-edged stills subjected one's retinæ to; a sort-of essay in halftone.
