Richard Truhlar
writer, artist, musician, performer, editor in the late'7os/early'8os (with John Riddell) of Phenomenon Press & the KONTAKTE serial of books, which mutated (with the collaboration of Steven Smith) into the Kontakte Writers in Performance series, which ran for several years in Toronto & hosted an astonishing array of challenging readers (hence, i grew up thinking this highend level of readings was normal, not exceptional; it's the sad reality of ever since that's shown me just how privileged we were to have this occurring in our midst). other editorial responsibilities include Teksteditions, Tronia Disc, & Underwhich Editions, a collaborative adventure wherein he was responsible for the majority of the Underwhich Audiographics Series of (primarily) sound poetry audiocassettes, besides active participation in the printzone. with Smith, Michael Dean & David Penhale, Truhlar was involved with Canada's 2nd sound poetry quartet, O(we)n So(u)nd, through the late'7os into the '8os. he also, with Glenn Frew & Mara Zibens, worked in 2 bands: Here Come The Warm Jets in the late'7os, newave rock, & Tekst in the '8os, live electroacoustics. i first met Richard when we lived for a time in the 2nd floor corner room of The Rex Hotel, across the street from which was The Music Gallery. i'd attempted to contribute to KONTAKTE magazine (in my late teens?), receiving a constructive letter back while saying he was suspending publication. having in the interim begun my own publishing projects, i was keen on producing some of his work &, when i recognized him one day outta the window going into The Music Gallery, i put a little letter & package together of things i'd done for him & watched for him to come back out, calling across & running down to say hello & pass it on. we became very good friends & collaborators. while i credit Barbara Caruso with teaching me how to see sound texts, i credit Richard with having had the patience & kindness to work with me so i could sound them.
