kids on the river 6:25

day 8

[homage à Luciano Cherubino 3/4]

slightly warmer day temperatures caused much seepage that made for a crinkly top layer of thin ice alongshore over the much thicker underlayer. took some doing to hack a hole in it with an axe but it seemed prudent to move fast over the darker stripe; the rest of the path was fine.

the random-edged wider path that starts at the foot of the hill was from day 7's test with a wooden ice spud, which failed to disturb the surface no matter how hard i punched it (it certainly disturbed the point on the spud (a 2x2 stake), smashing it flat) so i used it on hands & knees as a sweep in front of me for visual inspection until i was certain i was on previously existing shelf ice, walking the rest of the way & shovelling a defined route a little later in the evening.
