how plants split stones
this surface was exposed when the stone slab above it was found to have an extremely narrow, dirt-filled trough surrounding it, suggesting its coupla tons could be levered off into the water. after doing so, the new surface was brushed & subsequently rained on, cleaning it thoroughly enough to expose this fossil. its radiant corrugations have been tunnelled through by tiny roots travelling from the tree (out of frame to the left) in surprisingly straight lines toward the cliffface (out of frame to the right).
