snail graveyard

again in the guerrilla garden:

i'd removed a rather large boulder (up-ended just outta the frame to the right). a wiry root had snaked between it & the boulder it'd been lodged tightly against. this is about a foot below the previous surface. all along the root, snail corpses. this is not the first such root i've unearthed.

 

how the hell did they get down there?
