P.COB LOVES RUSSiAN giRl
this photograph was shot by Maggie Helwig sometime in the mid'9os.
it purports to be a P.Cob text somewhere in Montréal.
i can't just out & out call it an outright fake (by Helwig? by someone else but shot by her?) BUT:
1) the lettering is just wrong;
2) the irregular upper/lower case doesn't quite match with the way Cob's irregularities occurred;
3) the site itself is just wrong, too: in similar sites, Cob would use the "protected" surface below a lintel, not on it – so, either on the brickwork under the top lintel or the recessed concrete under the bottom one;
4) this is the only instance of the words "RUSSiAN" & "giRl" to occur in an ostensible Cob text: few of his works exist that cannot be cross-referenced to at least one other.
what gives, Maggie?
