Week 2 - This Is Me
Monthly Scavenger Hunt - December '11
Lollipop
They know me as "the lollipop girl", or just "lollipop", or even just "lolli", and one friend even turned it into ASCII art "@----".
It began with the photo that is my avatar here on Flickr. I took it for the Monthly Scavenger Hunt Group when "eye candy" was on the list of items we needed to collect one month. I thought it'd be a clever little play on words to have actual candy as my eye.
Shortly after taking the photo, I joined Twitter and thought it would be a fun pic to use as my avatar there. It was unique and would stand out from the crowd.
The primary reason for my joining Twitter was that it was the new social hub for fans of the music group New Kids On The Block, (if you were a kid in the 80s/90s, that name should ring a bell). Pretty soon, all five guys in the group signed up and got Twitter accounts too, and since then they've interacted with all of us fans there on a daily basis.
Several months later, a couple of my friends in the US went to one of the pre-concert meet and greets with the band. They spoke briefly to one of the band members, Jonathan Knight, (I'm a "Jongirl", meaning he's my fave guy in the group) and said they were friends with Phee (my username on Twitter was Phee78 at the time) from Australia and did he know who that was? He thought for a moment then said, "Oh, the one with the lollipop!"
A couple of weeks later, some other friends of mine were lucky enough to get to hang out with Jonathan for a while before another concert. One of them called me, and told me to hold the line for a minute. A few minutes later, she handed her phone to Jonathan, and I heard him say, "Heeeeyyy, lollipop girl!" down the phoneline.
In that moment, the legend of the lollipop was born and my teeth were doomed to rot, for I became "the lollipop girl" and ended up getting a little bit addicted to the things. Everyone started calling me by my new nickname, bestowed upon me by Jonathan Knight.
I have since amassed quite a collection of the sugary treats, either buying them myself, or having been given them as gifts. I also have lollipop charms and jewellery, items of clothing with lollipops on them, bags with lollipops on them, and one friend even sent me a pack of lollipop shaped soaps. It's not uncommon for me to receive tweets saying, "Saw this and it reminded me of you," with a photo of some random lollipop attached to the message. Even my friends who aren't NKOTB fans, now associate me with lollipops.
This humble piece of candy has kind of become my own personal icon.
In May of last year, I went to the US and finally got to meet Jonathan Knight. I happened to be sucking on a lollipop when we first met, which he found quite amusing. LOL
The smiley face lollipop in this Week2 photo (or "lollipoptrait" as I like to call my self portraits that feature a lollipop...there are several more in my lollipop set) was a gift from my friend Theresa. I figured it would come in handy for a photo one day. Good thing I hadn't eaten it yet. ;-)
