Mouse Ears, Cliff Net Bush
Calothamnus rupestris is a hairless shrub up to 3 m high. Elongate leaves 20-33 mm long x 0.5-1 mm wide with circular cross-section and sharp point at the end. Flowers singly or in clusters of 2-10 flowers along stem. Flowers have cup-shaped hairy floral tube 6-9 mm long with 4 sepals, 5-6 mm long and 4 petals, 7-8 mm long. There are four equal stamen bundles that are pink to red, 28-40 x 2-4 mm each with 18-26 filaments. Style is long and slender. Fruit is a woody 3-valved capsule 12-15 mm across which is hairy when young but which becomes hairless with age. There are 4 remnant triangular sepals at the end of the capsule, 2 thick and the other 2 thin and usually reflexed looking like mouse ears. Grows in gravelly soil and on granitic rocks, often close to water-courses.
