Bullhead Trump Rally
*Disclaimer: My comments on this post are about what I observed and experienced covering a Trump Rally. So unless you were there, save me the rhetoric.*
Oh boy, this should be fun. Last week I covered a Trump Rally in Bullhead City, Arizona. At first I was hesitant because of the nature of our current culture. And I'm pointing fingers at everyone on the political spectrum. My liberal friends acted like I was selling my soul to the devil and my republican friends assumed I was jumping on the Trump Train. When in reality I was covering the event for several clients as a member of the media. In other words, I was doing my job. Now whether you believe in Trump's message or you don't, these rallies are a significant part of our current history and will reflect how we look back on this election and Trump's presidency.
With that said my selfish reasoning, I really wanted to get a good look at Air Force One. It didn't disappoint, the airport in Bullhead has a short runway and Air Force One came in like it was landing on an aircraft carrier. And the power during take off was impressive. No matter who is on board, seeing that plane gives you goose bumps.
The Secret Service is a class act. The work they have to do at each of these rallies appears overwhelming but they get it done and do it well. The agent assigned to the press pool was accommodating and efficient. And the folks from the Trump Campaign that were in charge of wrangling the media were nothing but professional. They appreciated competence over political view points when it came to the networks.
On the subject of networks, I was right next to CNN for the majority of the rally and what a shit assignment for that crew. Before Trump arrived people would come up and yell random things, but it was mostly innocent to that point. When he arrived and spouted off about the fake news media every chance he could, the innocence was no longer present. "CNN Sucks" became "Fuck CNN" and the creativity spiraled from there. Of course, Trump didn't specify which media was fake, so the whole press pool was open game. The sad part was there were little kids joining in and things got a little weird and venomous. I see no outcome in the future where this hyperbolic agenda leads to anything but violence against the press. And that is some scary shit.
Bullhead City and the surrounding area has a large population of low income retirees. And when you're old and on a shoe string budget you probably don't have the best healthcare. I'm sure you know where I'm going with this, masks. At the beginning of the rally, I'm going to say 30% of the crowd had a mask on. By the time Trump had everyone foaming at the mouth, that dropped to about 10%. I'm guessing there were 15,000 people at the rally and the majority of them were bussed in. And despite what the Trump Campaign states, masks and social distancing were not encouraged.
To sum it up, I feel like I attended an elaborate pep rally that had a bitchin plane.
