"once in a blue..."

Look up in the sky. Tonight's moon on New Year's Eve is a blue moon. We generally see one full moon (by definition) per calendar month. However, the lunar calendar is just slightly shorter than our average monthly calendar. As a result, every few years we will get two full moons in one month. The second full moon in the same month has been referred to as a blue moon. This is the origin of the idiom, “Once in a Blue Moon”.

Our last blue moon was May 2007. The last blue moon on New Year’s Eve was on 1990. The next New Year’s Eve blue moon will not be until 2028.

Have a wonderful and safe New Year’s Eve everyone. I am looking forward to more inspiring work from you all in 2010. Cheers!
