Wounded and "missing in action" following the Battle of Drewry's Bluff, 16 May 1864, he had been taken prisoner and sent to Libby Prison. Witnesses say that Hiram, being too sick in captivity, was sent away to a hospital, and never seen again.
[ME Veterans Cemetery Records list unit as Co. I, 20th Maine Infantry, 29 Aug 1862 - 4 Dec 1863, but that was another Hiram, of Southport.]
Lived in Washington, Maine, 1860 census.
Died 16 Nov 1865 (sic - should be 1864), aged 35 yrs. His widow Nancy filed for a pension on 14 July 1865.
