Radical pedestrian integration

No curbs, no gutters, these downtown streets eliminate the artificial barriers to pedestrian access that are a standard part of car-centered design.

Sidewalk pavement is a different color, and corners are protected with steel bollards, but every foot of street frontage is accessible.

For pedestrians, wheelchairs, bicycles, baby strollers, and delivery company hand carts, that means direct access to the desired address, rather than detouring down the street to the nearest curb cut.

Note the texture of the pavement in the parking lane -- pervious asphalt pavement allows modest rainfall to infiltrate without traditional drainage gutters and grates.
