Superstition: an open umbrella in the house brings bad luck.
But those of us who use small translucent umbrellas to diffuse light know that's not true... or do we?
Presumably some Chinese people have a belief: that to open your umbrellas at home means that you’re inviting ghosts to your place.
“A living person has a shadow, and according to age-old Chinese beliefs, the ghosts of people who have died look like people without shadows. When you open an umbrella at home, you would notice that there’s a shadow underneath it – which effectively works as an entrance or even a door for a ghost to come into your home.”
