Coin Macro

A package arrived yesterday from my Dad. In it was the Vivitar 283 flash with the busted hotshoe he had offered. But that wasn't all that that was in the box. Very carefully shrouded in bubblewrap was a souvenir from my childhood days.

The memento was a Canon 50mm macro lens. Of all the lenses my father owned, this was my favorite. I'd shoot endless rolls of film (Kodak Tri-X, for anyone who remembers it) of bugs, fabrics, rocks, anything that seemed interesting close up. And when you're 11 years old, *everything* is interesting.

Also thoughtfully included in the box was an FD to EOS lens adapter, so I could use the macro lens with my 40d. Of course, it doesn't support AF and you still have to set the aperture yourself, but when shooting macro pretty much everything is set manually anyway.

Which brings us to this photo. A test shot was needed to make sure everything works, and I had a quarter handy. It's all coming back now, the shallow DOF, getting the right aperture setting and the right distance.

I think I'm ready to go shot some bugs again :)
