amities
On the rear of the postcard - "Souvenir de Monsieur et Madame Hennant et leur fille, Houplines, le 15 Janvier 1915.
Many French families remained in their homes, even close behind the front line, and offered rooms to soldiers. The Hennant family may have put my Grandfather up.
This was a testing period. Very wet weather had set in during the first weeks of January. The River Lys had flooded the surrounding country and parts of the trenches. Evacuation trenches had to be dug, water baled, fallen parapets and bug hutches repaired. 'Trench foot' was rampant.
