Kittredge, IL in May 1940
This view from May 1940 looks west along the Milwaukee Road main at Kittredge, IL, just east of Lanark.
Kittredge served as the junction between the east/west Dubuque & Illinois Division main connecting Chicago and Savanna, IL, and the Racine & Southwestern line heading up to Beloit and Racine.
In 1940, a sturdy-looking tower controlled the junction between the two lines, and there's a fair bit of interest at Kittredge – mechanical interlocking pipeline, semaphore signals, dwarf disc signals, water tanks, tool houses, MOW buildings, and so forth.
Today, I expect one could visit this location and see absolutely no signs that any of these structures ever existed. View large to see the details.
Ian and Lampy, I figure you two will get the biggest kick from this shot. Enjoy the glance back in time!
