A Taste of the 80's--Today!

Conveniently-fallen boarding finally made this place sidewalk-accessible.

Opened in 1969 or 1970 as a short-lived Holiday Inn that closed in '74, it became a Sheraton by 1978, and was Initially part of a complex consisting of the sports center to the east, and the Genesis Convention Center to the west. Faced with lack of anything to do in Gary, low I-90 traffic, delays and the ultimate downsizing of the Genesis Center, and the building's value nosediving led to the hotel's quick decline and closure by 1984-5 at the height of the city's decline. As a result of the GCC's smaller-than-planned footprint, the west side of the building features a pedestrian bridge to nowhere.

The building has served as a billboard a couple of times, and the most-recent development attempt got as far as asbestos abatement before finances went sour.
