Intrusion
Within the first hour of the visit: my brother and I were working in Penneys, attempting (and failed) to rescue-loot the "Catalog" sign, when we began hearing voices nearby. I stopped and climbed down to check outside if anyone was inbound -nothing.
We start to contemplate bailing out, then see a man and woman walking towards us carrying tools and a large hammer. At first I thought it was a tripod, and asked if they were fellow UE-tards, but they were actually scrappers.
It seemed a bit awkwardly-sketchy at first, but it was actually a rather pleasant run-in. They had been working in here since early this year, "disposing" of the duct and metal workings in Penneys, the light ballasts in Jewel, and other "parts" of the mall. It also explained the fresh tire tracks found throughout the place; they had been driving their truck in and around it, collecting their loot.
They had a couple of interesting stories; one about how cops showed up and they escaped out the back, and the other time they came outside to find EPA doing some kind of work in the parking lot. Apparently they ran into some kids filming a movie in the mall, too (more on that later).
We exchanged email addresses (I sent them a link to the set), and moved on. They were working on a freezer in Jewel, and called for help a little bit later. We got in to find their truck parked inside, and a massive machine sitting near the back. We helped them out, and they were cool with a photograph of their handiwork. Took all four of us to load it in -put up a decent fight, too; that fucker was heavy!
Then we noticed the air hiss; five minutes later their tire was nearly flat. The original photograph was to be of the loot under a lightstream ("The Holy Grail"), but because of the sudden need for a quick exit, this was fine. Accidentally left it on a long exposure, though.
Keeping their identities hidden for obvious reasons... and black boxes are boring, hence the "Max Headroom masks".
