JCPenney Logo 1963 - 1971
Regenerated former logo for JCPenney department stores; really wanted to create a high-quality version of this classic since there seems to be none out there.
It was first used in 1963; prior to this it was just some generic font, and as far as I know this is an original font created for Penneys. It lasted until early 1971 when founder James Cash Penney died, and the company changed its name in honor of him.
Only a handful number of stores still have any trace of this logo; the rest switched to the current Helvetica font "JCPenney" logo throughout the 80s and 90s.
In ads, the slogan "Always First Quality" appeared underneath, stretching from the P to the Y. I could not find an accurate font to add the slogan.
This is one of a few old logos I'm recreating from screenshots of movies and scans; George Romero's Dawn of the Dead has been a tremendous help in identifying old logos of a 1970s shopping mall.
(and fuck you to whoever yanked this for Wikipedia)
