General Sherman Tree HDR, Sequoia National Park

The Giant Sequoias in King's Canyon and Sequoia National Park were unlike anything I had ever seen before. They were tall, sure, but that isn't what was so impressive about them. It was their massive girth that was so astounding to behold. These trees are extremely old and absolutely gigantic.

 

It was nearly impossible to photograph these trees without something (or someone) in the image to create some sense of scale. This is a shot of me and my wife standing in front of the famous General Sherman tree, the largest living Sequoia.

 

Fun Facts (from Monumentaltree.com): The tree called "General Sherman" is not only the biggest giant sequoia, but it is also the biggest tree in the world. He is 83.8 m (274.9 feet) tall, his girth at breast height is 24,10 m (79 feet) (near the ground it is 31,3 m or 102,6 feet). The width of the crown is 33 m, and the first branch starts only at 40 m or 130 feet!"
