Enjoying the ride
One of Bamberg's gondoliers chats with passengers as they glide along on the Regnitz River, nearing the lower City Hall bridge in central Bamberg. By coincidence, this shot shows a passenger smiling as she looks up at the gondolier. I've desaturated the background and water (making it a partially monochrome image), and cropped to 1:1 (square). Here's some background info:
Fishing has a long history in Bamberg. And fishing families live in an area along the Regnitz River that has long been known as Little Venice (Kleinvenedig). So why not have a gondolier or two as well? Jürgen Riegel got inspired with this idea, had a gondola built in Venice, and became Bamberg's first gondolier in 1994.
