All Dressed Up
This black headed male Gouldian finch is one of my favorite birds at the Bloedel Conservatory. With its bright colors, no wonder it is also called "rainbow" finch. Please see my other photos displaying a few other color variants there, which are simply gorgeous. It was a marvelous experience inside the Conservatory when these finches were flying and wandering around me, as if they wanted to make friends with me.
The Gouldian finch is native to North Australia, but there is strong evidence that its population is declining. Large numbers are bred in captivity, particularly in Australia. It is currently subject to a conservation program. In 1992, it was classified as "endangered in the wild" under IUCN's criteria C2ai. [Source: Wikipedia]
