American Alligator on the Prowl (In Explore July 29, 2025)
If you are a nature/wildlife photographer here in Florida (or elsewhere in the coastal SE US) gators are a pretty common sight.
Our most common photo targets are herons, egrets, spoonbills, storks, pelicans, etc. All of which are associated with water.
So it's rare to get out to photograph our common targets and not see gators.
But I rarely photograph them these days as they are, well, kinda boring subjects. Unless you are lucky enough to catch them feeding on something, they kind of just sit there. Not very captivating.
But occasionally I do if I find the right situation. First requirement is that there must be some light in their eye. No light on the eye, it's not interesting in any way.
Second, I look for a pretty clean background.
In this case, I liked both of those features (although I did do some minor cleanup on the water) and of course the nice reflection.
Overall I think it works. Hope you agree.
