Alcatraz Island

A deliberately dark and sobering set of photos of this island taken on my third visit, but 20 years my last. The atmosphere of this location never dims and the excellent cell house tour narrative is evident in each of these photos. Hearing the voices of inmates and officers past whilst taking the pictures provides a whole new perspective to the photography. The photos were taken using a single lens EF-S 16-35mm, f/2.8 designed to capture the lines, space and feel of the prison in low light conditions. The National Park Service have added the pictures of some of the most infamous inmates as you enter and this really helps to dispel the myths behind this once high security pententiary. The words of "Machine gun kelly" resonate the most. "written on the walls of my cell in fire. There is nothing on earth worth the hell of this place"
