Buffalo Bur Calyces

Since I did some prickly seeds yesterday, I might as well put this one up as another addition for my prairie seeds collection. Buffalo bur berries are enclosed in spiny calyces. The common name "buffalo bur" alludes to the plant's tendency to grow abundantly around bison wallows. Buffalo bur is drought resistant and extremely aggressive. When mature, the main stem breaks near the ground and the plant rolls like a tumbleweed, scattering thousands of seeds.
