A former Union Pacific SW1500 now in the employ of a huge transload operation in the stix east of St Louis. Operated by trucking company Southern Illinois Motor Xpress, Inc., they handle dry bulk goods such as lime, fly ash, sand, carbon, and food-grade materials. Their yards have a capacity for 940 cars with nearby connections to the Union Pacific and Canadian National Railroads. Scattered about the property I counted three other end cab EMD switchers, a former UP SD40-2 and an ex-GM&O GP38AC of all things. The facilities are located on the grounds of the old Captain Mine operated by the Southwestern Illinois Coal Corporation. This mine was the principal supplier of coal for a power plant at Plaines, Illinois, near Joliet. This plant was operated by Commonwealth Edison. The Gulf Mobile & Ohio RR hauled the coal in unit trains starting in 1964.
