The late spring season colors on the east slope of North Mountain give an almost fall season look. Buckingham Branch RR's Mountain Local has been climbing this steady 1.6 percent grade for nearly four miles since crossing the Middle River east of Swoope. And they are just short of a mile from reaching the top of this grade at 2,082 feet above sea level - the highest point of any C&O track - 10-feet higher than the famed Alleghany grade.
