Generations

Decades of cartoon classics, having a little meet-up.

A timeline of these old-timers:

1919: Felix the Cat (seen here in the button pin) makes his first appearance, in an animated cartoon by Otto Messmer.

1929: Debut of Popeye in Elzie Crisler Segar's Thimble Theater comic strip (which had its beginning in 1919, and would be renamed for its new star). Popeye's co-stars Wimpy, Bluto (sometimes known as "Brutus"), and Swee'Pea are here for the soiree.

1933: Nancy shows up in the Fritzi Ritz comic strip. Fritzi is Nancy's aunt, and she eventually loses the title slot of the feature to the girl. Nancy's creator, Ernie Bushmiller, was a surreal genius. Nancy's pal, Sluggo, came onto the scene in 1938.

1959: "And now, here's something we hope you'll really like!" Bullwinkle J. Moose and Rocket J. Squirrel debuted on TV in "Rocky & His Friends" (later retitled "The Bullwinkle Show") from Jay Ward productions. The show had none of the animated beauty of the 1930s Popeye cartoons, but more wit than could be found in most TV cartoons for some time to come.
