Portrait of Nadogomi and Bardomoye

Mursi tribe

Nadogomi is a mother of 5 children. The boy in the picture's name is Bardomoye.

The clay disk inserted into a woman's lower lip is a Mursi tradition. The piercing begins around puberty, and it is stretched larger and larger in small intervals. Anthropologists believe that the Mursi started using lip disks as a way to deter slave raiders from stealing women. The Mursi today see it as a sign of beauty and status. The larger a woman's lip disk, the greater dowry in cattle her family can obtain upon marriage.
