Roscoe Mitchell

In 1972, the Art Ensemble of Chicago came to Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan to conduct a one-week clinic. I was one of roughly 30 people who signed on. Roscoe Mitchell the founding member of the group, apparently liked the area and decided to stay. He found a small house in Bath, a small rural community a few miles north of town. I got to know him a little by participating in the clinic and through Roscoe's acquaintance with David Wessel, a neighbor of mine, and who was instrumental in bringing the AEC to town.

On June 18, 1973, he appeared at our family door. I know the date only because my mother has it in her diary. Roscoe was directed to my room, and we had a short visit. I have no idea what we talked about or why he had come. But I was thrilled.

Sometime later he got in touch with me, and asked me if I would come to his house and take passport photos of he and his wife Mary Ann. A few days later I got on my bike and rode to the address he had given me. It was a very small house, and a little rundown. He had a plot of vegetables in the yard, and he showed me the renovation work he had done inside. It was very cozy.

I took the photos and went back home. The photos came out decently, though a touch out of focus.
