Suttons Bay, Michigan, 1978

Some friends and I made the long drive from East Lansing for this concert in the upper left-hand corner of Michigan's lower peninsula. I've never known how it happened that the Art Ensemble got a gig at this tiny theater, but it's not entirely unlikely. From about the time of this concert, The Bay Theatre has offered a tasty selection of foreign and independent films, as well as live performances. Other musicians who have performed there include John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, T Bone Burnett and Mose Allison.

I'd seen the Art Ensemble many times, but this concert like no others. Typically the band has a stage full of instruments. In this instance they came stripped down. Drumset, bass, and one horn each for Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman, and Roscoe Mitchell.
