I said to him, "People must tell you all the time that you look like, um" -- the name wouldn't come to me -- "that actor who was in Freaks and Geeks..."
Brain is definitely clogged. Surely he knows who I mean, and just as surely he'll say it and tell me it's not him.
"... and a bunch of Judd Apatow movies ..."
He gives me this bewildered look like he has no idea.
I think of an additional clue. "He smokes a lot of pot."
"I can relate to that," he says. Or something similar.
Then it comes to me -- the star's name. I say it. He smiles lightly but he's shaking his head, like he either doesn't know who I'm talking about or doesn't acknowledge any resemblance.
Then I have a fleeting thought. Maybe it's really him, and this is his way of handling celebrity-spotters.
Or maybe he gets this all the time, and he's just having fun. Maybe he instructed his friends to play along with him, because that's what they're doing.
I take a few photos, and as I drift away I keep slipping into an It's Actually Him mindset.
It's a few weeks before I process the film and have another look, and the resemblance doesn't look quite so strong. Nevertheless, I just have to check Google Image Search.
What do you think I discovered?
