Apache setup shot

Got off work a bit early today and since it was Friday and my youngest is inside taking her nap I decided to try something I'd been thinking about all week: shoot in broad daylight. When metered for ambient I knew right away all the speedlites would be firing 1/1. The question was placement and distance.

With me in the center I wanted to separate myself from the back so placed a 580EX II and a 550EX at the rear. With that sorted it was time to move to key.

I tried using a beauty dish and a shoot through but both ate up too much light and in order for it to actually work I would have to hold it close but I just couldn't do it in this solo shot. I ended up leaving it bare on a stand with a hard angle towards my left side keeping in mind the direction of the helmet to avoid a bright glare on the visor.

A press of the self timer and putting on the helmet later I got my shot.

Strobist info:

1 430EX (key) front high camera right 1/1 power

1 580EX II (rim) rear subject camera left 1/1 power

1 550EX (rim) rear subject camera right 1/1 power

Completed shot can be found here

Thanks to @richardcelis for the use of the helmet!
