1401 Main Street Columbia Mural 12

I finally got an unobstructed shot at this very neat mural at 1401 Main Street in Columbia, South Carolina. The building, constructed in 1976, houses office space. Many historic and iconic buildings have stood at this pot through the years. None of the architectural details common to the earlier buildings here were included in the current skyscraper, which was designed by the architectural firm Lyles, Bissett, Carlisle & Wolff of South Carolina.

The first building at this location was Columbia's first City Hall as well as a market. It was burned during Union occupation during the Civil War in 1865. A second City Hall was built at the same location. It included office space on the first floor as well as an opera hall. Some called the building grand in its architecture. Others thought it symbolized political corruption during Reconstruction. It, too, was lost in a fire, this one in 1899. In 1900, the South Carolina National Bank built a three story building at this location.

The mural was painted in 2021 by Ija Charles. Her website touts her as a self-taught artist and entrepreneur from Columbia, South Carolina. This is one of five murals she has painted in Columbia. In an interview that aired on WLTX News, she said the mural depicts long gone businesses in an African-American community on nearby Washington Street during the segregation era.
