In the Snow
Saturday, having heard of an impending significant snowfall in the high country, four of us jumped into Derek Brown's F-unit (a Ford F-150) and headed west. We left early in the morning, and Derek masterfully kept us on the slick and unplowed roads as we climbed toward the Moffat Tunnel. Unfortunately, trains were few, but the white mantle and snow-flocked trees were magnificent.
At 9:30 a.m., we stood in foot-deep snow as a Union Pacific eastbound loaded coal train rounded the curve at the ESS at East Portal, Colorado. The locomotives on the slow-moving train were configured 2+3+1. We were able to catch this train a few more times.
