Life Is Better In Colour
The other day while I was looking after my nephew, he was telling me how excited he was about having rainbow hair for "wacky hair day" at his daycare. When I asked if he liked rainbows he said, as honestly as a 3 year old would "I like all the colours the best". And it really sat in my mind.
Isn't it so much better to like all the colours? To celebrate all the colours, to see the value in each and every one and how beautiful they make our world? Pride is a chance for us to take a moment do just that. To celebrate love and diversity and inclusion and make sure the value of each of us is celebrated.
I came out almost 20 years ago and to be honest it was difficult. Friends, coworkers and people I considered family suddenly turned their backs to me and refused to let me be part of their life anymore. One day I was valued, the next day not at all and it hurt, for a long time. But eventually I realized that their closed off minds and hearts only meant that they were removing themselves from seeing my joy, my love, my success and being a part of the world that I colour in my own way and that is their loss, not mine.
This month, and every month, I encourage you to see how much better the world is when we lift each other up, when we see the value in each life, see the beauty in diversity and how much better the world is when it's full of different colours.
