Black Dog

Did you know that the month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month? And that specifically this week in Canada is Mental Health Week?

I often draw inspiration from my own experiences with my mental health. I found that for me, when a cloud of depression or a flurry of anxiety hit my mind the only way I could see myself through it was to be productive. To visualize what it felt like and looked like and to make something with those feelings so that I could see it and say "You felt like this, but it's not the only thing you're going to feel"

I've been reading an amazing book called "How To Survive The End Of The World (When It's All In Your Head) by Aaron Gillies. It's a really funny and inspiring and powerful book about understanding our minds and our mental health. In one chapter he refers to "the black dog" which is an often used visual for people experiencing depression. And the visual really sat in my mind.

I created this image yesterday, in a literal and physical fog. I was jet lagged and feeling a bit lost and when I looked out at 6 in the morning and saw the fog in the trees I knew this image was going to be made. And for me, once I took it and edited it, all the feelings got put into it and they all faded. Like smoke, like fog, like the black dog always does.
