Huize Matthijs - Marijke in Gorinchem

Dit huis met een gevel in Lodewijk XIV-stijl is in 1557 gesticht door Matthijs Aelbertz en zijn vrouw Mariken Kolff. Zij bepaalden dat het na hun dood een huis voor weeskinderen en vondelingen moest worden. De gevelsteen verbeeldt toepasselijk de bijbeltekst "Laat de kinderen tot mij komen". Links op de gevelsteen staat de binnenvader van het weeshuis. Hij heeft de jongetjes onder zijn hoede en leert ze lezen en schrijven (hij heeft de plak in zijn hand). Rechts zit de binnenmoeder met de meisjes die moesten leren handwerken. Op haar schoot zit een meisje dat door haar ontluisd wordt.
In het steegje naast Huize Matthijs-Marijke zie je in de muur van het gebouw nog het zogenoemde ‘vondelingenluikje'. Achter dit luikje werden vroeger wel eens pasgeboren baby's te vondeling gelegd.
This house with a facade in Louis XIV style was founded in 1557 by Matthijs Aelbertz and his wife Mariken Kolff. They determined that it should be a home for orphans and abandoned children after their death. The facing brick aptly represents the bible text "Let the children come to me". The 'father' of the orphanage is on the left of the facing brick. He has the boys under his care and teaches them to read and write (he has the stick in his hand). On the right is the 'mother' with the girls who had to learn how to do needlework. On her lap is a girl who is being deloused by her.
In the alley next to House Matthijs-Marijke you can still see the so-called 'founding flap' in the wall of the building. Behind this hatch, newborn babies were sometimes abandoned.
