Kottumbo

Kurponnem (Kurponnim pl.)

How many of you are using or remember using this in your home kitchen?

Kurponn (to go with 'Mandd'). 'Kurponnem' is made up of bamboo and the 'mandd' is made up of wood, both round and about same size (MANDD is slightly wider than KURPONNEM

Kurponn-Mandd used for straining rice cooked in a earthen pot.

The pot mouth is covered with Kurponn-Mandd and placed on 'Kottumbo' in an slanting angle with pot mouth facing downward.

'kottumbo' = Another rectangular 4 legged wooden stand (pic).

In between the four legs, another earthen vessel called 'kodem' is placed.

All the water from the rice/pot drains into this kodem.

The rice water so collected is called 'dhonn' or 'dukra khann or hann'

'Dhonn' is food or drink for the pigs (mixed with 'Kunddo' (paddy husk), 'Pendd(i)' a byproduct of dry coconut after extracting oil from it.(coconut cake) along with any leftover or discarded food items

Extra:

A legend associated with it

When kids, we were told a girl (domestic help) who did not know how to pray went on chanting (praying) 'mandd-kurponn-mandd' repeatedly and become a saint. This legend was also mentioned to us at high school std X by our Teacher C B
