Clewell vase

A superb example of copper-clad pottery by the metalworker from Canton, Ohio, Charles Clewell, is estimated to bring between $2500 and $3500 at the Treadway-Toomey auction on May 7. A large, 15-inch tall vase in a classic form with an exquisite original red and green patina, the piece is marked "8-2-6." When he wasn't otherwise occupied as a metalworker or a technician for a roller bearing manufacturer, he toiled for years to perfect his metal-on-pottery overlay technique and his incomparable patinas. As he wished, the secret to his techniques remains a mystery to this day. In 1937 he was recognized in Paris, where he was awarded the distinguished "Diploma of the International Exposition of the Arts and Techniques" by the French government.
