DSCN8439 black swan
Cygnus atratus (black swan, cygne noir, Tauersschwan, чорний лебідь, łabędź czarny) is a species of waterbird in the Anatidae family in the Poznan Zoological Gardens (Old ZOO - ‘founded 1871’). The swans appear all black when swimming but some of the wing feathers are white, seen in flight. The large birds with mostly black plumage, and a red bill with a broad white band on the tip breed mainly in the southeast and southwest regions of Australia. They are usually monogamous with both partners sharing incubation, and cygnet-rearing duties, and often have the same mate for life (occasionally in colonies). Young are born precocial. The juveniles are greyish brown. Habitat: lakes, rivers, wetlands, on almost any body of water. Food: aquatic plants, algae, grass, and herbs (occasionally insects).
