Snowy late May surprise (2 of 2)

I went out for a drive on the Uncompahgre Plateau west of Montrose, Colorado. It was 75F in town so surely Divide Road would be open. I expected a bit of residual snow under the evergreens but by 10,000 feet elevation the snow was pretty much everywhere. Oh, at least the road was plowed but sloppy.

Then suddenly the plowed road was no more. I found this quite strange because the snowplow had traveled for eight or nine miles from the last intersection only to stop, turn around and retreat. So did I. There was still about two feet of unplowed snow and I had 8 to 9 inches of clearance.
